To the east of Salerno, after the headlands of Pontecagnano, Battipaglia and Eboli, is Paestum, which is one of the most important italian archeological sites . Here a guided tour of about an hour and half will take you in some of the best preserved ruins, architecture and monuments of the Greek world, such as the Temple of Poseidon (Neptune) ,the temple of Ceres and the Basilica, dating from the 6th Century.
The National Archaeological Museum of Paestum opened in 1952, with the aim of exhibiting the materials found during the excavations at Paestum (opposite the museum) and the cycle of antique metopes and other materials from the Heraion - the temple of Hera Argiva - built by the Greek colonists at the mouth of the Sele. In the museum you can admire the Tomb of the Diver a magnificent example of Greek painting, representing a funeral banquet. The tomb depicts a young man diving into the water is considered one of the greateast archeological discoveries of the 20th century.
